The "Poinçon de Genève", 125 years of excellence for the future

10/11/2011

The 125th anniversary of the “Poinçon de Genève”, a certification that has become over time a worldrecognized label, brings together some 500 representatives of the watchmaking world, the economy and the media, in addition to a number of political authorities. The event not only honours Geneva’s rich horological history, but also serves to unveil the new certification requirements rewarding exceptional watches that are conceived and assembled on Genevan territory. As underlined by Daniel Favre, President of the Foundation Council of TIMELAB – Geneva Laboratory of Horology and Microengineering that hosts the certification, “The ‘Poinçon de Genève’ is undergoing an evolution that will give it even more standing. This sort of AOC1 is a true guarantee of quality whose boundaries are being enlarged so as to correspond as closely as possible to customer expectations for Fine Watchmaking pieces.”Pierre François Unger, State Councillor in charge of the Department of Regional Affairs, Economy and Health of the Republic and State of Geneva, pointed out the benefits of the Hallmark of Geneva for the local economy: “The certification plays a vital role for the development, creativity and innovation of the Canton’s watchmaking industry. Through its requirements, the “Poinçon de Genève” helps maintain qualified employment and advanced training schemes in a multitude of areas. The entire sector, including subcontractors and the whole group of Genevan watch manufacturers, is stimulated by this process that is directed at achieving excellence.”The President of the “Union des fabricants d'horlogerie de Genève, Vaud et Valais” (UFGVV), Juan Carlos Torres, also underlined the value of the “Poinçon de Genève” for the watchmaking sector: “In an industry imbued with authenticity, and amid uncertain times propitious to genuine values, a clear, precise, transparent and  intelligible label is naturally a key asset. It provides companies with an assured  means of protecting and preserving their expertise, as well as perpetuating the crafts related to the world of Fine Watchmaking.”To read the complete press release, please click here !
