23/02/2009
Neste Oil, a Finnish company specializing in cleaner traffic fuels, has just established a trading office in Geneva. This arrival strengthens Geneva's profile as a major trade and shipping centre, as well as its position within the clean energy sector.
Aiming to become the world's leading supplier of products for cleaner traffic, Neste Oil Corporation follows a growth strategy focusing on top-quality NExBTL renewable diesel. The company has decided to establish a specialist trading office in Geneva. Based in Vernier and operational as of January 8 2009, Neste Oil (Suisse) SA currently employs 32 people, and plans to create further positions by 2010. With around 5,200 employees worldwide, Neste Oil’s activities include oil refining and marketing, producing renewable fuels, oil retail, shipping and engineering services.
The canton welcomes a future leader in clean fuel productionNeste Oil’s strategy involves employing its refining know-how and expertise to produce the finest quality, low-emission fuels for transport. This strategy is based on the growing worldwide demand for high-quality and renewable transport fuels that support sustainable development and help reduce greenhouse gases. To meet this demand, Neste Oil has developed NExBTL renewable diesel fuel. It represents the cleanest diesel fuel available on the world market.
With one-third of the world’s raw materials traded out of Geneva, the canton is the European continent’s capital of this commerce. “We selected Geneva due to the concentration of businesses from the sector, which is a major plus for the development of our activities. Geneva’s qualities, such as its geographic location, its international environment, and the availability of a well-qualified, multilingual workforce were also key factors,” explained Heikki Saarinen, Director of Neste Oil (Suisse) SA.
Geneva – the strategic choice for ‘clean-tech’Neste Oil’s new office represents a strengthening of Geneva's economic environment. “Firstly, the arrival of the company reinforces the trading and shipping cluster, a key sector of our economy. Secondly, it boosts the ‘clean-tech’ industry. All businesses that operate in the development and marketing of clean or sustainable products bring expertise to our canton, and this is obviously the case with Neste Oil, whose strategy is based on massive investments in clean fuels,” commented Daniel Loeffler, Director of the Geneva Economic Development Office. The ‘clean-tech’ cluster is growing steadily in Geneva, with the presence of several reputable multinationals and the development of local Geneva businesses in this field. Mr. Pierre-François Unger, Minister of Economy and Health of the Geneva canton, underlined that "the innovative nature of Neste Oil, as well as its strategy focused on sustainability make it an asset for Geneva's economy. The canton clearly supports the development of this kind of businesses as it offers a real competitive advantage to Geneva, especially in the current economic context, characterized by a number of uncertainties."
